Default Socket error 8197 with Palm HotSync Manager

I have recently upgraded to Outlook 2003 on my ThinkPad and use a Palm Vx
and HotSync Manager to sync. Now I get a socket error: 8197 upon booting and
several times during the day. I can perform a hotsync when the palm is in
the craddle and connected thorugh the serial port at my office. But when I
work from home I usually sync with IR and that is not possible anymore.

I suspect the two problems are related. However I haven't found any
description of this socket error anywhere. An help anyone?

I started getting this socket error: 8197 message after I had to repair the XP installation on my HP zd7000 laptop. After updating my Palm Desktop software to no avail, I finally fixed the problem by removing the IrDA Fast Infrared Port from the device manager and forcing the system to rescan for devices. It occurred to me to try this because I remember seeing an InfraRed port in the list of connections on the HotSync icon in the SysTray. After the problem started, that connection option was not available.

Do this by:
1) Click on the XP Start button
2) Right-click on My Computer and select Manage
3) Click on Device Manager
4) Right-click on IrDA Fast Infrared Port (under Infrared devices) and select Uninstall
5) When the system is done removing that device, right-click on the computer name (at the top of the list) and select "Scan for hardware changes" and follow the instructions
6) Once the system settles down (i.e. reinstalled the driver) try loading HotSync Manager again. If it's already loaded, Exit out and then relaunch it.

Default Palm Hotsync Socket Error 8197

This was simple yet brilliant. Thank You. I've had the same error and I've been going nuts trying to fix it off and on for about four months now.

This worked perfectly on my Thinkpad T42. Thanks Again!!
