Default CD write speed?

I have a weird problem with my CD writer. It seems to think that CD-Rs are
CD-RWs and the maximum write speed is 2x when it should be 24x (I have a a
CRD-BP1700P rewriter.

CD-RW's just show as invalid media.

I run XP and have Nero installed.

Any clues as to what I should do next?

Steve
