Purchased HP Pavilion with XP home. After 2 weeks, it
locked up and no icons and nobody, including HP, could get it running without wiping the disk. Wiping the disk is not an option, folks. Spent $81 and had a PC shop get it running again. But in the middle of creating email with Outlook Express, it would often give me a little screen saying that the machine had performed an illegal operation and was going to shut down. Of course, I lose all I have written. Awful. Other software would no longer run, such as the DVD or the media player stuff. So, nobody wanted to help. Finally, I purchased another laptop and moved everything from the sick HP with XP to the new one, but this time no XP but Windows 2000 pro. I don't want XP. I have come to learn that XP may work fine for the masses, but that it has bugs that will ruin your day. And nobody wants to do anything to help you. So I bought Windows 2000 Pro. Wiped the drive in the HP and guess what? The HP laptop will not allow 2000 to be installed. Surprise. When I ask HP about this, they tell me it is Microsoft's problem. Yeah, sure enough, finger pointing. Well, the world is unfair. What to do? Live and learn and stay away from HP and XP. Can someone tell me what I must do to install Windows 2000 on the HP Pavilion laptop? Before I sell the HP laptop and take a huge loss and buy another Gateway with 2000 Pro on it, I want to be sure. The poor consumer is up against these massive companies that do things with total impunity. I'm down now to just seeing if someone else understands what I have been through and can give me some straight answers. Sincerely yours, John Lemburg |

After two weeks you have so much data, that isn't backed up
or on another computer that you can't wipe the disk and start over? What did YOU load after you bought the computer (was it a new computer?) that may have caused the problem, did you try to use your old, old software and did you check to see if was compatible before you installed it? Just what did the PC shop do to get it running? XP has very few bugs, users have very little knowledge and expect that their $1,000 computer will be as easy to operate as a B&W TV.
