Not possible, as there is no DOS in Windows XP.

To boot into DOS, create a Bootable floppy, via My Computer, right click Floppy 3.5" and select Format, then tick option for a startup/boot disk! This makes no sense at all. You cannot install an operating system inside another operating system. You *can* run something like Virtual PC and create virtual machines for various operating systems - such as Win98. If you are trying to completely replace Windows XP with Windows 98 because your computer doesn't really support XP, then: 1. Boot with a Win98 boot floppy that has fdisk, format, and preferrably cd-rom drivers. 2. Use fdisk to delete all partitions on your drive. 3. Use format to format FAT32 4. Then put the Win98 install cd in the drive. 5. c:\ mkdir win98 [enter] 6. cd d: (or whatever your cd drive is) 7. d:\copy win98 c:\win98 [enter] - copies files 8. d:\cd c:\win98 [enter] 9. setup [enter] - installs Win98 Make sure you have drivers for your hardware. If this is not what you wanted to know, please read the information at these links to see what to include in your next post and how to write it (capitalization, punctuation, etc. in order to make it easy for people to help you): http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html Malke -- MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" |

Can't be done. i have win98se in my hard drive...when i try to open the setup of win98se..............it say you cannot install this version of windows As well it should. in your current type of windows version i.e. in xp...........it says restart windows in ms dos mode to install this version of windows98se............reply soon..........pls help me out......... It's not at all clear what you're actually trying to accomplish. Are you trying to create a dual-boot scenario with both Win98 and WinXP? If so: If your C: drive is formatted using the FAT32 file system, MS-MVP Doug Knox has kindly provided clear instructions: Install Windows 98 after XP is Installed. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm Otherwise: The simplest way I've found to dual boot between Win9x/Me and WinXP would be to partition your drive(s) roughly as follows: C: Primary FAT32 Win9x/Me/Legacy Apps D: Extended NTFS WinXP/Modern Apps Adjust the partition sizes according to your actual hard drive(s) size and the amount of space you'd like to allocate to each OS and its applications. Create the partitions using Win9x's FDISK so you can enable large disk support (FAT32). (No need for 3rd party partitioning utilities/boot managers and their frequent complications.) Install Win9x/Me first, being sure to select "C:\Windows" (or D:\Windows, if you prefer) when asked for the default Windows directory. When you subsequently install WinXP, be sure to specify "D:\Winnt" (or "D:\Windows," "C:\Winnt" as referred/applicable) when asked for the default Windows directory, to place it in the other partition. The WinXP installation routine will automatically set up a Multi-boot menu for you. The default settings for this menu can be readily edited from within WinXP. NOTE: If you elect to place Win9x/Me on the "D:" drive, you'll _have_ to leave the "C:" drive as FAT32. This method can be adapted to using 2 physical hard drives by placing the boot partition (C:, which still must be FAT32) and either of the operating systems on the Primary Master hard drive, and the second operating system on the second hard drive. It is also possible to have a 3rd partition for shared applications, but it would be necessary for such a partition to be formatted in the common file format (FAT32). The applications would also have to be installed into each OS (to ensure proper system file placement and registry updates), one at a time, but the bulk of the program files could be located on this common partition. I do not, however, actually recommend doing this as, if you were to uninstall such an application from one OS, you may not be able to gracefully uninstall it from the second OS, having already deleted crucial installation data during the first uninstall action. Just about everything you need to know (URLs may wrap): http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q217/2/10.ASP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../multiboot.asp Or are you trying to replace WinXP with Win98? If so: The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice. Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the uninstall option to be available. Sorry, but your post is unreadable. If you can't take the time to write in complete sentences with punctuation and capitalization to make it easy to read, I can't take the time to give you detailed information on how to dual-boot. Is English a second or third language for you? If so, may I suggest that you try posting your question in a news group dedicated to your native language? I say this not to insult or offend, but rather to point out that you're not likely to get much help, if no one can understand what you're asking. Otherwise, I'd suggest you start by reposting in standard English, complete with paragraphs, sentences, capital letters where appropriate, and punctuation. As it is, your post is quite undecipherable: most of the the words used are from the English language, but are completely meaningless as currently assembled. A product key is issued with all legitimate copies of Windows, it is on the CD case with the CD. If
you have a copy without a key then you are not allowed to install it. Buy a legal copy and do a google search for Dual-Boot this give you sites on setting up a dual boot system. -- Dave Vair CNE, CNA, MCP, A+, N+ "ram_magnus" wrote in message ... guys see i need windows xp and windows98se ok.................i need multi operating system................i have in windows98se in my d drive...............i used the start-up disk and i hav installed windows98se.................but there was no product key given to me................it asks for product key to proceed.............wat should i do know.................but i want 98se. -- ram_magnus |
