Who do you trust on the internet nowadays http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-co...ng_2014_en.pdf The only ones scared by the spreadsheet are those that have not a clue how their anti-virus software works. Lots of the transmitted data is to provide up you updates: your OS, its version, what language, what AV version you have (so it knows if there is a program update), what sig database version you have (so it knows what next update to offer), and so on. That this spreadsheet says your IP address gets identified just shows how stupid is a user that thinks that is terrible. Obviously ANY connection you make anywhere, like to check and get updates, will have to know your IP address; else, how the hell would they know to where to deliver that data? Then there is the info about files on your host. Well, if you don't want to include cloud-based checking of yet-unknown files to have them analyzed online then disable that feature. For example, Avast has its sandbox (Deepscan) with the feature that unknown files are tested online for deeper analysis. If you don't want that then turn it off. EVERY anti-virus program that incorporates some cloud-based services will be sending files to their analysis mechanism (for current or subsequent testing on the unknown file). If you don't want the AV program to further test unknown files then don't. If you don't want the product to send info about which URLs you have visited then disable its blacklist feature. Do without the malicious site blacklist. Do without analyzing the web page. You'll probably have to disable all the AV program's web interrogation features. All the AV programs that I've trialed or used had an option to disable sharing your detections (via "community" data sharing). Disable the community option if you don't want the AV program to report what it has found, data used to determine where are the most infections, on what hosts, in which countries, etc. Don't give them any logistics if you fear that anonymous data is helping them too much. If you don't want all that data getting sent to the AV vendor then disable it. You still won't be disable what they need to know to ensure they send you the proper program updates. |

My experience with ransomware and zombieware (installed by others that I have to cleanup) is that the user was lured into installing it. They hit a site that tells them they are infected. The boobs believe it and install the malware. The major security vulnerability of a general- purpose OS is the user. Because computers are sold to everyone, gullibles are included (and the same reason why spam continues). |

Unless that's changed recently, it's a very basic protection. (as well as Malwarebytes' free scanner if ever there is a doubt). I use MB myself, as a malware scanner, but if ever there is a doubt I would ask for second and third opinions: www.virustotal.com makes a good starting point. For my part, a weekly imaging of my system How does that block a threat? and UAC being set all the way to the top is more than enough protection. UAC being set all the way to the top is fine, but not enough. |
